How to add a custom domain?
Learn how to add a custom domain on Fastory to publish your games and Experiences under your own domain name instead of the default story.tl address.
A custom domain lets you publish your Fastory Experiences under your own domain name, instead of the default story.tl/ address. Here is how to request it, activate it, and set it up.
What is it for?
A custom domain replaces the story.tl/ part of your game's URL with the domain name of your choice. Your Experiences are displayed under an address that reflects your brand, looks more professional, and is easier for your participants to remember.
Before you start, you must have purchased your domain name from a domain provider.
Request activation of the add-on
- From your workspace, open the Add-ons page.
- Click the search bar and type Custom domain (CNAME).
If you do not have access to this add-on, contact us by clicking the Contact us button and fill in the activation request form. We will then get back to you: the custom domain can be added as an option to your subscription.
Set up your custom domain
Once the add-on is activated on our side, you need to send us the domain name you purchased so we can add it to our servers. We then generate a DNS key and send it to you. You will need to create a redirect to this DNS key in your domain settings.
Then, in Fastory:
- On the Add-ons page, click the edit icon next to the Deactivate button.
- Add your custom domain name without
https://, only the domain name (for example:contests.brand).
- Choose your domain's destination using the Redirection field (see the section below).
- Confirm, and you are all set.
From now on, your custom domain URL is automatically applied when you publish your games.
Choose your domain's destination
The Redirection field determines which content your custom domain points to:
- If you leave the Redirection field empty: your custom domain redirects to your Fanzone by default.
- If you enter an Experience: your domain points to the Experience of your choice. To do this, enter the end of the URL. For example, if the original URL is
story.tl/christmas-contest, enterchristmas-contest.
Best practices
- Purchase your domain name before requesting activation of the add-on.
- Enter only the domain name, without
https://.
- Make sure to create the redirect to the DNS key we send you, otherwise the domain will not work.
- Decide in advance whether your domain should point to your Fanzone or to a specific Experience, then fill in the Redirection field accordingly.
Concrete use cases
If you want to run a contest under your own brand
Purchase your domain name, have the add-on activated, then enter the end of your Experience's URL in the Redirection field. Your participants access the game through an address that fully reflects your brand.
If you want your domain to point to your Fanzone
Leave the Redirection field empty. Your custom domain automatically redirects to your Fanzone, which centralizes all your content under a single address.
If you want to target a specific Experience
Enter the end of the URL of the Experience in question in the Redirection field (for example christmas-contest). The domain leads directly to the chosen game rather than to the Fanzone by default.
FAQ
What is a custom domain on Fastory?
It is a domain name that replaces the story.tl/ part of your games' URL. Your Fastory Experiences are then displayed under your own address.
Do I need to purchase my domain name myself?
Yes. You must purchase the domain name from a domain provider beforehand, before requesting any activation in Fastory.
What should I do if I do not have access to the custom domain add-on?
Click the Contact us button on the Add-ons page and fill in the activation request form. The custom domain can be added as an option to your subscription.
Where does my custom domain point if I do not set a redirection?
If the Redirection field is left empty, your custom domain redirects to your Fanzone by default.
Do I need to enter https:// before my domain name?
No. Enter only the domain name, for example contests.brand, without https://.
What is the DNS key and why do I need to create a redirect?
Once you have sent us your domain, Fastory generates a DNS key. You need to create a redirect to this key in your domain settings so that your domain works properly with your Experiences.
What happens when I publish a game after setting up my custom domain?
Your custom domain URL is automatically applied when you publish your games, with no extra steps required.
