How to set up a game in a public place, at a trade show, or internally?
Learn how to configure a Fastory game for kiosks, tablets, or shared QR codes: enable auto-reload, disable IP anti-spam, and test your setup before the big day.
A game running on a kiosk, a tablet, or shared via a QR code requires specific configuration. Usage conditions (unstable internet connection, older devices, simultaneous connections) can put your setup to the test. Here are the settings to apply to make sure everything runs smoothly.
What is it for?
When you run a game in a context where several people participate from the same device and the same connection, two problems arise without the right configuration: one player's data overwrites the previous player's, and the IP-based anti-spam blocks participations. The setup described here lets you count each participant individually and allows everyone to play.
You are in the right place if you are launching:
- an internal game for your employees;
- a game at a trade show;
- a game in a public place (kiosk, QR code, tablet...).
How does it work?
1. Enable the bot's automatic reload
This option automatically reloads the game after each play and generates a unique visitor ID (visitorID) for each person who participates. Without it, one player's data overwrites the previous player's, especially when everyone plays on a single kiosk or tablet.
To enable it:
- Open your game's bot.
- Click the Settings gear.
- Enable the automatic reload option.
- Click Save, then Publish.
2. Disable the IP-based anti-spam
By default, an IP-based anti-spam limits cheating by preventing multiple participations from the same IP address. In a public place or at a trade show, most players share the same connection: the anti-spam would block them.
Good news: when you enable the bot's automatic reload option described in step 1, the IP-based anti-spam is automatically disabled. If in doubt, write to support@fastory.io to double-check.
3. Test, test, and test again
We cannot say it enough: test your setup before the big day.
- Use the most recent kiosks and tablets possible to avoid compatibility issues.
- Open the game with the latest version of the Chrome browser.
- Test the game mechanics on site, make sure the bot's data is recorded in Audience, and check the quality of the internet connection.
Best practices
- Always enable the bot's automatic reload before running a game on a shared device.
- Make sure the IP-based anti-spam is disabled, especially if all players go through the same connection.
- Prepare recent devices (kiosks, tablets) and update Chrome.
- Test the full setup on site: game mechanics, data flowing into Audience, and internet connection.
- Anticipate simultaneous connections and a sometimes unreliable internet connection.
Concrete use cases
If you want to run a booth at a trade show
Install the game on one or more tablets, enable the bot's automatic reload to count each visitor individually, and test the venue's connection in advance.
If you want to launch an internal game for your employees
Share the game via a QR code or a shared link. The automatic reload ensures each employee gets their own visitor ID, even when participations happen in quick succession.
If you want to set up a self-service kiosk in a public place
Choose a recent kiosk, open the game in an up-to-date version of Chrome, and make sure the IP-based anti-spam is disabled so no participant sharing the same connection gets blocked.
FAQ
Can I run a Fastory game on a self-service kiosk?
Yes. A Fastory game is perfectly suited to a kiosk, a tablet, or a QR code, as long as you enable the bot's automatic reload and check that the IP-based anti-spam is disabled.
Why does one participant's data overwrite the previous one's on my Fastory game?
Because the bot's automatic reload option is not enabled. Without it, no unique visitor ID is generated and each new play replaces the previous one's data.
Do I need to manually disable the IP-based anti-spam in Fastory?
No. When you enable the bot's automatic reload option, the IP-based anti-spam is disabled automatically. If in doubt, contact support@fastory.io.
Which browser should I use to run a Fastory game on a kiosk or tablet?
Use the latest version of Chrome, and favor a recent device to avoid compatibility issues.
Where can I find the data collected during my event with Fastory?
Participations are recorded in Audience. Remember to check on site that the bot's data is flowing in correctly before launch.
What should I do if the venue's internet connection is unstable for my Fastory game?
Test the game mechanics on site and check the quality of the connection before the event. A recent kiosk and a stable connection greatly reduce the risk of interruptions.
