How to create and collect opt-ins?

Learn how to create opt-in questions in your experience's Bot to collect GDPR-compliant consent and export participant responses from Audience.

Opt-in questions let you collect your participants' consent before using their data. Add them to your experience's Bot, then find all the responses in Audience.

What is it for?

Adding an opt-in question lets you collect actionable data while staying GDPR-compliant. You obtain your users' explicit consent to use their information, such as their email address or phone number.

We recommend adding an opt-in question if you want to:

  • sign the user up for your newsletter;
  • send commercial or marketing offers by email or SMS;
  • share their information with your partners.

Create an opt-in question in the Bot

Opt-in questions are set up directly in your experience's Bot. If you're just getting started, first review the basics of creating a Bot in our dedicated article.

To create one (or more) opt-in questions:

  1. in the dropdown menu, select Opt-in;
  1. write your question text in the field provided;
  1. add as many answer choices as you like.

We recommend giving the user a real choice: two distinct answers, or one answer combined with the option to skip the question.

Add answers

You can attach several answers to your question. To do so:

  1. click the + button next to Add an answer;
  1. write the text to display;
  1. in the dropdown menu, select the attribute matching the data you're collecting, or create a new attribute with the + button.

The attribute determines where the collected data will be stored: choose it carefully so you can easily find your responses later.

Enable the option to skip the question

You can allow the user not to answer. Enable this option at the bottom of your question's settings screen: the SKIP label then appears at the bottom of the Bot.

You can also change the displayed text by filling in the Skip button label field, visible once the option is checked.

Retrieve opt-ins in Audience

Audience centralizes, among other things, the opt-ins you collect. You can download a CSV file containing all the information. To learn more, check out our article on retrieving data collected through the Bot.

To export your opt-ins:

  1. go to Audience;
  1. in the table filters, open Export;
  1. export the CSV, with or without participant scores.

The file lists, across all your experiences, the responses of everyone who accepted the opt-in.

Best practices

  • Always give the user a real choice: freely given consent is the foundation of GDPR.
  • Write a clear, transparent question about how the data will be used (newsletter, offers, partners).
  • Link each answer to the right attribute to keep your database clean and actionable.
  • Enable the skip option so participants who prefer not to answer aren't blocked.
  • Regularly check your results in Audience and export the CSV to feed your marketing tools.

Concrete use cases

If you want to sign participants up for your newsletter

Create an opt-in question asking for permission to send emails, link the positive answer to the email address attribute, then export the consents from Audience.

If you want to send offers by SMS

Add an opt-in question dedicated to SMS marketing consent and link it to the phone number attribute to easily segment your sends.

If you want to share data with a partner

Set up an opt-in question specific to partner sharing, separate from the newsletter one, so you can track clear consent for each use.

If you want to respect participants who decline

Enable the option to skip the question: users who don't wish to consent can continue the experience without friction.

FAQ

Where do I add an opt-in question in Fastory?

Opt-in questions are created in your Fastory experience's Bot, by selecting Opt-in in the steps dropdown menu.

Where can I find the collected opt-ins?

All responses are gathered in Audience, where you can export a CSV file listing the participants who accepted the opt-in.

Can I create several opt-in questions in the same experience?

Yes. You can add as many opt-in questions as you need in the Bot, for example one for the newsletter and another for sharing with your partners.

No, if you enable the corresponding option. The SKIP label then appears at the bottom of the Bot and the user can skip the question.

Can I export opt-ins with participant scores?

Yes. When exporting the CSV from Audience, you choose whether or not to include participant scores.
